Investor insights with Volker Hirsch
How was the last year, what worked well, what didn’t move as quickly as you would have liked?
We launched our latest early-stage fund in the autumn, which was hugely exciting. The fund looks to invest at Seed and A stage.
What are your plans for the future?
I am keen to expand our footprint into areas outside London and Cambridge. Amadeus has always been actively looking elsewhere. From my vantage point in the NW of England, I’m planning to do more of that.
What will you be talking about at this event?
I will be speaking on a panel about SaaS (“Software as a Service”), which describes a business model often seen these days. We will speak about the good, the bad and the ugly and our learnings from a variety of angles (in my case mainly from an investor’s point of view).

What inspired you to attend it?
We have actively been looking at the Republic of Ireland as a place close to our home and are keen to work more closely with its ecosystems. The 0100 conference is a good stepping stone for this.
Which influencers and websites do you follow to keep up to date with the latest developments?
I don’t follow influencers. I am reading a lot and keep connected with the people within the technology ecosystems.
FT, Economist, New Scientist, FAZ, NY Times, newsletters from universities (some publish regular research updates) and trade/government bodies (eg KTN and Innovate UK as well as TechNation) as well as angel groups, syndicates and accelerators (like TechStars and Wayra). I use Twitter sparingly but mainly follow accounts that inform about science and technology.
I have co-founded the not for profit Tech North Advocates that connects the tech ecosystem in the North of England and regularly speak with stakeholders, including other investors, startups etc. I volunteer time to help with accelerator programmes and make sure to remain accessible to founders and investors alike. I’m on the advisory board of NorthInvest and Campus Capital and an active UKBAA member.
How can people find out more about what you are working on?
My social handle across most channels is @vhirsch.
Thanks, everyone. That was fun. Sorry I’m having to race off. https://t.co/UE7BYgbhvn

More about Volker Hirsch
I am a technology entrepreneur and investor with a focus on AI/ML, autonomous systems, human-machine interfaces, MedTech, Cyber Security, Enterprise SaaS and Digital Health. I also maintain my interests in EdTech and mobile technology in general.
I generally try to help people – that is if you have a great idea, project, company or calling that does more than optimising the display of cat videos on the Internet…
I was involved with a few pioneering deals and concepts, including:
— the world’s first mobile artist services for the likes of Britney Spears, Eve and Duran Duran;
— mobile games publishing for top-tier brands (such as Marvel, Hasbro, Call of Duty, True Crime, Guitar Hero, LEGO, BMW, Konami, WPT, etc) waaay before there was the iPhone;
— building the (at the time) largest mobile content distribution network globally (250+ direct carrier deals all over the world);
— helping build a mobile social gaming platform to more than 450m users.
— helping launch what is now the leading EdTech accelerator in Europe.
I have founded companies, raised money and exited successfully (and failed a few times on the way).
I have tons of board experience in venture-backed companies in Germany, UK, US (CA, WA, NY, DE), Spain, Israel and Malta.
I am a regular keynote speaker on technology, entrepreneurship, mobile, education, IoT and entertainment (e.g. at TEDx, SXSW, Mobile World Congress, 4YFN, CTIA, Mobile Games Forum [Chairman 2013], PICNIC, European Pirate Summit, Israel Mobile Summit, Mindshare Media Summit, Droidcon, etc).
Finally, I am relieved that LinkedIn, after years and years of placing me in Stockport, finally got it right: I am (currently) a proud Maxonian (that is resident of Macclesfield for the rest of you).
