Sanders hopes Biden goes ‘in more progressive direction’

Bernie Sanders said he hopes Joe Biden moves in a “more progressive direction” and vowed to do everything he could to defeat President Trump in his first interview since dropping out of the presidential race on Wednesday.

The Vermont lawmaker paid a visit to Stephen Colbert’s “The Late Show,” saying that he’d spoken to the former vice president since ending his campaign  — before pivoting to what sets the two men apart.

“It’s no great secret that Joe Biden’s politics are different than mine,” Sanders said.

“But I have known Joe since I came to the Senate in 2006, worked with him when he was vice president in the Obama administration, and what I would say to people is that Joe is a very decent human being.”

“I hope to be able to work with Joe in order to move him in a more progressive direction,” Sanders said.

Calling Biden a “good politician,” Sanders said his ex-rival “understands that in order to defeat Trump he’s gonna have to bring new people into his political world.”

“He’s going to have to listen to their needs, young people, working people, and maybe start moving in a different direction to some degree than he has in the past.”

But asked whether that counted as a “full-throated endorsement” of the presumptive nominee, Sanders demurred.

“Well that, we’re going to be talking to Joe and we are, we’re talking to his team of advisers,” Sanders said, before repeating his promise to “do everything that I can to make sure that Donald Trump is not reelected.”

“I believe Trump has been the most dangerous president in the modern history of this country, and we’re seeing his narcissism play out in terms of this pandemic that we’re experiencing right now,” Sanders continued.

“So I will do everything I can, but I can say that we’re talking to Joe, and we’re talking to his team about how we can work together.”
