It was only a year ago that White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders got taken behind the woodshed at the annual White House Correspondents Association (WHCA) dinner. So during this year’s dinner, President Donald Trump held a rally in Wisconsin to toot his horn, and he invited his press secretary on stage.
As Sanders walked toward the podium, the crowd chanted, “Sarah, Sarah, Sarah.”
Sanders took a moment to talk about Trump’s accomplishment in two-plus years, and reflected upon last year this time when comedian Michelle Wolf blasted Sanders and endured suffered a backlash through the media.
“Last year this night I was at a slightly different event, not quite the best welcome,” Sanders said. “So this is an amazing honor. I’m so proud to work for the president.’
Sanders then lauded Trump’s achievements during his time in office, and reminded the audience of “no collusion” in the recently-released Bob Mueller report.
“They said there was collusion and there wasn’t,” Sanders said. “They’ve questioned him at every step and he’s proven them wrong every time because of you.”
Sanders drew a loud applause from the Green Bay crowd, showing that she’s become popular as well. This led the president to say one of his trademark quotes.
“She doesn’t get it. She doesn’t understand me after all these years,” the president said as Sanders was leaving the stage and heading toward the crowd. “She’s becoming too popular, Sarah, I’m jealous. You’re fired!”
Trump soaked in the moment with his grin and followed with, “she’s great.”
Trump turned “You’re fired” into a nationally-known catchphrase during his role during the show ‘The Apprentice,’ and he’s continued using the phrase during his 2016 presidential campaign and jokingly like Saturday.
Outside of the Trump family, Sanders has been one of the most high-profile people who served both the campaign and endured more than two years into his presidency. Kellyanne Conway is another. There has been a remarkable amount of turnover at other high-level positions and within the president’s Cabinet since January 2017.
Here are the remarks Wolf made at last year’s correspondents dinner, pre this ABC report:
“And of course, we have Sarah Huckabee Sanders. We are graced with Sarah’s presence tonight. I have to say I’m a little star-struck. I love you as Aunt Lydia in ‘The Handmaid’s Tale.’ Mike Pence, if you haven’t seen it, you would love it.
“Every time Sarah steps up to the podium I get excited, because I’m not really sure what we’re going to get. You know, a press briefing, a bunch of lies or divided into softball teams. ‘It’s shirts and skins, and this time don’t be such a little b—-, Jim Acosta!’
“I actually really like Sarah. I think she’s very resourceful. Like she burns facts, and then she uses that ash to create a perfect smoky eye. Like maybe she’s born with it, maybe it’s lies. It’s probably lies.
“And I’m never really sure what to call Sarah Huckabee Sanders, you know? Is it Sarah Sanders, is it Sarah Huckabee Sanders, is it Cousin Huckabee, is it Auntie Huckabee Sanders? Like, what’s Uncle Tom but for white women who disappoint other white women? Oh, I know. Ann Coulter.”
