Amazon amazon alexa Andru Edwards Echo Wall Clock Geared Up

Why we wouldn’t buy another one anyway – GeekWire

Amazon has decided to temporarily stop selling its Echo Wall Clock, a device that displays the time of day and connects with an Echo device to show active timers.

“We’re aware that a small number of customers have had issues with connectivity,” an Amazon spokesperson told GeekWire in an email. “We’re working hard to address this and plan to make Echo Wall Clock available again in the coming weeks.”

GeekWire purchased an Echo Wall Clock to try before they were pulled from Amazon’s virtual shelves. On Tuesday, tech reviewer Andru Edwards and I tested out the clock while recording this week’s Geared Up podcast.

The verdict: neither Andru nor I would pay the $30 for the Echo Wall Clock. Although we did not encounter the connectivity issues experienced by other customers, we were not impressed. Although the Echo Wall Clock delivered on its promises to show the time of day and to display timer animations, we did not see how this product could add much value to users’ lives. Echo devices are already capable of setting timers, which can be tracked on the displays of touch-screen Echo devices, and via audible alerts on devices without displays.

The Echo Wall Clock does not have Amazon’s Alexa built-in, so it requires users to pair the clock with a compatible Echo device within a 30-foot radius. Click the video above to watch our first impressions.

The Verge first first reported Amazon’s decision to pull the clock from its website.
